A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

The world ended in light. You are the dark that's left — and he is still alive in here. Keep the light out. Keep him in.

Play fullscreen, sound up, lamps off. The dark is the game and the sound is the dread. Turn your screen brightness up if the dim rooms are hard to read.
Contains near-total darkness, sudden bright light, and brief flashing during the swarm.

Something ended the world, and it came as light. Now you keep to the dark of a house at the forest's edge — and you are not alone in it. He is here: warm, awake, moving room to room, throwing every switch he can find, trying to get a door open and get out into the night.

You cannot let him.

Vigil is a top-down reverse-horror game where you play the thing in the dark. You move only through shadow — step into light and you freeze where you stand. You snuff the house's lamps to reshape the floor and herd him back from the exits. You loom in the black to break his nerve. But he fights: he relights what you kill, he pins you in his torch beam, he runs for every door — and every light burning in this house calls something worse out of the trees.

You'll tell yourself it's a hunt.

He will beg you to open the door.

He doesn't understand what's waiting in the light. You do. Hold him until dawn.

How the night ends

He escapes — A door opens. He's gone into the dark outside.
The swarm — Too much light, too long. They come.
Dawn — You held him through the night. He's still here.

Controls

  • W A S D — move through darkness (light freezes you)
  • Space — blink: a short teleport across walls and light, on a cooldown
  • Q — snuff a nearby lamp

No map. No markers. The light he spills is the only thing that shows you where he is.

"Limited Power" — three ways

A dying battery — His torch runs down. Light is a resource he has to ration.
Power only in the dark — You command the shadow — and the instant light touches you, you're frozen and helpless.
A monster, inverted — You're cast as overwhelming menace. The whole game is restraint.
